Photo Colonel Mark A. Hinds is the Director of Strategic Research and Analysis, Strategic Studies Institute, United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He recently served in Afghanistan as the Deputy Chief of Operations (DCHOPS) for HQ ISAF, Kabul. He is a graduate from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in German-Education. Colonel Hinds’ formal education includes a Masters Degree in National Security Affairs in Russian-East European Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and is a Ph.D. candidate in Organizational Leadership from the University of Oklahoma. His special study interests are in multicultural leadership and how culture influences leaders and followers and the techniques and tools to use to enhance leadership in multicultural and multinational organizations. His military education includes the Reserve Officers Training Corps, Aviation Officer’s Basic and Advance Courses, Army Rotary Wing Aviator Course, Army Combat Aviator Qualification Course, Combined Arms Services and Staff College (CAS3), Defense Language Institute/Foreign Language Center, USA Russian Institute, United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC), and the U.S. Naval War College. Colonel Hinds’ major assignments include Attack (Apache) Platoon Leader in 5-229th Flying Tigers Commander, Fort Hood, Texas, Operation Desert Shield/Storm, and Giebelstadt, Germany; Company Commander, B Company, 1-101st Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Military Assistant to Director, George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, Garmisch, Germany; Deputy Team Chief, Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Frankfurt, Germany; Deputy Representative of Chairman, JCS and Military Advisor to U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Security Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Joint Staff, with duty in Vienna, Austria; Section Head for Current Intelligence, NATO Joint Force Command HQ Brunssum, Netherlands; Deputy Chief of Operations, HQ ISAF, Kabul, Afghanistan. Combat tours include Operation Desert Shield/Storm, numerous missions to Balkans, and ISAF/OEF. Colonel Hinds’ awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Meritorious Unit Award (with Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Star), NATO Medal (ISAF), Saudi Arabia Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Army Aviator Badge (UH-1H, OH-58, AH-64), Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.
