Un-"Steady" State Operations: Redefining the Approach to Phase Zero in a Complex World, by LTC Thomas R. Matelski
|
 |
You can access our ongoing podcast series "SSI Live" with our own Dr. John R. Deni. Are so-called gray zone wars — the kinds of operations Russia or Iran has engaged in recently — really novel security threats? How can the United States best respond to them in terms of adjusting its current campaign-planning framework? Dr. Deni invited his SSI colleague, Dr. Antulio Echevarria, to discuss the latter's latest monograph, "Operating in the Gray Zone: An Alternative Paradigm for U.S. Military Strategy." Find this and all other podcasts here and be sure to subscribe.

2015 - 2016 KSIL |
On August 7, 2015, the 2015-16 Key Strategic Issues List (KSIL) was released. The KSIL provides military and civilian researchers a ready reference for issues of special interest to the Department of the Army and the Department of Defense.
Read here.
In the most recent posture statement to the U.S. Congress, General Milley
highlighted the importance of anticipating the future, adapting, and
capitalizing upon opportunities. The future the nation faces represents a
"changing security environment that requires the Army to make difficult
decisions in order to remain an effective instrument of the Nation's
military power." Those decisions are underpinned by thorough research and
scholarship and the pressing security needs of the nation. The Strategic
Studies Institute publishes the annual Key Strategic Issues List (KSIL) to
inform students, faculty, and external researchers of strategic issues
requiring research and analysis. The next edition will be staffed throughout
the Army shortly to refine the list of topics. Topic coverage will include: strategic leadership, the military profession, strategic
Landpower, national and military strategies, and futures and regional
studies. Stay tuned for the updated edition appearing in the next few
months.

The new issue of the Carlisle Compendia has been released. The Carlisle Compendia of Collaborative Research, an electronic publication of student-faculty work, is produced under the purview of the Strategic Studies Institute and the United States Army War College. Each compendium reports the findings of a major student-faculty research initiative on a topic of strategic importance to the Army, the Department of Defense, and the larger community of strategic leaders.
The faculty of the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) includes a carefully selected mix of men and women with deep experience in military and national security strategy. To provide a venue for their analysis of the challenges and best practices of strategic leadership and to make available to the students and faculty of USAWC and other institutions in the professional military educational system, the Strategic Studies Institute has created the "practitioners' corner."
