Nuclear Heuristics: Selected Writings of Albert and Roberta Wohlstetter, edited by Robert Zarate and Henry Sokolski. Pioneers of nuclear-age policy analysis, Albert Wohlstetter (1913-1997) and Roberta Wohlstetter (1912-2007) emerged as two of America's most consequential, innovative and controversial strategists. Through the clarity of their thinking, the rigor of their research, and the persistence of their personalities, they were able to shape the views and aid the decisions of Democratic and Republican policy makers both during and after the Cold War. Although the Wohlstetters' strategic concepts and analytical methods continue to be highly influential, no book has brought together their most important published and unpublished essays--until now.
The Serpent in Our Garden: Al-Qa'ida and the Long War, by Colonel Brian Drinkwine. This Army War College student research paper examines methods to counter al-Qa'ida and new approaches to fighting terrorism. The author explores the group's organization, leaders, doctrine, and ideologies and provides recommendations for the development of a grand national strategy and an integrated long war campaign plan.
Japan's Decision for War in 1941: Some Enduring Lessons, by Dr.Jeffrey Record. The author analyzes Japan's decision for war in 1941, and concludes that it was dictated by Japanese pride and the threatened U.S. economic destruction of Japan. However, he finds that the road to war was built on American as well as Japanese miscalculations and that both sides suffered from cultural ignorance and racial arrogance. He concludes with relevant lessons for present national security decisionmakers.
Building Partner Capacity/Security Force Assistance: A New Structural Paradigm, by Colonel Scott G. Wuestner. This Letort Paper considers whether the U.S. Army has the proper force structure and minimal capability to fight and win the counterinsurgency of the future. The author develops a new structural paradigm to help the United States gain access, influence, and build capacity throughout this new world order.

Strategy Conference |
Strategic Implications of Current and Emerging Technologies conference registration is now open. Fee is $150.
While over the last decade a great deal of attention has been given to how information technologies are changing the strategic environment and shaping warfare, little has been mentioned about other revolutionary technologies, such as biotechnologies and nanotechnologies, in terms of their potential strategic impact. This conference will address that gap. Please see the conference website for the agenda, registration, and more.
